Robert Lewandowski- The new Zbigniew Boniek?
(born August 21, 1988) is a Polish footballer who plays as a striker for Lech Poznañ. He is highy regarded in Poland as the greatest footballing talent since the golden days of Boniek & Lato.
In 2006-07 Lewandowski was the Polish third division's top goal scorer with 15 goals, helping Znicz Pruszków win promotion. The next season he was the top scorer in the Polish second division with 21 goals.
In June 2008 Lech Poznañ signed him from Znicz for 1.5 million z³otych. He made his debut for Lech in July 2008 as a sub in a first round UEFA Cup qualifier versus Khazar Lenkoran from Azerbaijan. In that match he scored the only goal of the match. During his Ekstraklasa debut in the first game of the season in a match against GKS Be³chatów he scored a beautiful heel flick goal just four minutes after coming into the game late second half.
Lewandowski has been attracting the attention of many clubs from top European leagues. In June 2009, Birmingham Mail columnist Colin Tattum revealed that Birmingham City were tracking the striker to partner new club record signing Christian Benitez.
He is well known in Poland for being so-called "debut scorer". He scored his first goals in debuts in Polish II Liga (playing for Znicz Pruszków), I Liga (Znicz Pruszków), Ekstraklasa (Lech Poznañ), Polish Cup (Znicz Pruszków) and UEFA Cup (Lech Poznañ). Additionally, approximately three weeks after his 20th birthday, he improved those feats by netting one in his first cap for Poland in which he came on as a late substitute.
Only W³odzimierz Lubañski, who is widely considered a "legend", scored a goal in his debut for national team being younger than Lewandowski, having been 16 at the time.
Lewandowski has appeared once for Poland's U21 team, as a sub in a friendly against England in March 2008. His debut for the senior national team came on September 10, 2008 against San Marino where he came on as a sub and scored one goal. Lewandowski would score his second international goal for Poland in the 3-2 victory over the Republic of Ireland.
